Description
During the Cold War, American cultural diplomacy sought to cultivate influence in Greece through educational exchanges, cultural programs, information campaigns, and elite networks. Focusing on the period between 1953 and 1973, Zinovia Lialiouti draws on extensive archival research to reveal the ambitions, contradictions, and limits of U.S. efforts to win the hearts and minds of a country at the crossroads of East and West, offering a fresh perspective on the cultural dimensions of the Cold War.
Zinovia (Jenny) Lialiouti is associate professor of European History at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is the author of Anti-Americanism in Greece 1947-1989 (2016), The ‘Other’ Cold War: American Cultural Diplomacy in Greece 1953-1973 (2019), and Leadership and Science. Yagos Pesmazoglou and the Diplomacy of Ideas, 1954-1974 (2026). She has published papers in peer-review journals and edited volumes on the Cold War, the history of propaganda, cultural diplomacy, national identities, and ideological currents in the twentieth century.
