Anthropology Resources for Students and Young Scholars

Image result for London Anthropology DayJune 30 is London Anthropology Day, held at the British Museum’s Education Clore Centre, where participants get to learn what anthropology is about, the types of careers anthropologists have, and gain hands-on experience of what it is like to study the subject at university.

London Anthropology Day is organised by the Royal Anthropological Institute’s Discover Anthropology Education Outreach Programme in collaboration with the British Museum and participating universities.

World Refugee Day

The United Nations’ (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event  draws public’s attention to the millions of refugees and Internally displaced persons worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict and persecution.

In History: 71st anniversary of D-Day

“You must prepare the invasion of Europe because we will never win this war unless we bring the war against Hitler on his own land” – Winston Churchill

June 6th will mark the 71st anniversary of The Normandy landings, the day when Western Allies landed in northern France, opening the long-awaited “Second Front” against Nazi Germany. The largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe, led to the restoration of the French Republic, and contributed to an Allied victory in the war.

International Workers’ Day

May 1st is International Workers’ Day (also known as May Day) which is a celebration of the international labour movement and left-wing movements. Tradition Taboo: Disagreements between Common Practice and Public Discourse

Hans Steinmüller’s Communities of Complicity: Everyday Ethics in Rural China is now available in paperback. The ethnography explores the moral uncertainties experienced by the people of the village of Zhongba in Central China as they navigate and balance the expectations of capitalism and their traditional culture. The author offers a reflection on his fieldwork in rural China and insights into Chinese culture in the following post.

The main idea of ‘Communities of Complicity’ has to do with the delicate relationship between vernacular practices and official discourse in rural China. In regards to geomancy (fengshui), rituals, gifting, and corruption discourse, for instance, official representations are often inconsistent with local practice. While it is very common to invite ritual masters for family celebrations and to give money gifts at such occasions, these practices are often described in public discourse as backwards and corrupt.
