Description

Sustainable mobility projects, including electric transport infrastructures, cycling and pedestrianization initiatives, are implemented in cities across the world today. This book offers an ethnographic exploration of such projects in Cuenca, Ecuador, focused on the controversies around their implementation and the question of what ‘sustainability’ comes to mean and do in this specific context. Against tendencies in critical social sciences to dismiss ‘sustainability’ as always insufficient, especially in modern, neoliberal situations, it proposes to take sustainability claims seriously. Although these claims may draw on modern ideas that separate nature from culture and assume Eurocentric notions of progress, they take different forms in practice.
