Description

Focusing on the Asháninka and Nomatsigenga peoples of the Peruvian Amazon, this book engages with current debates on archived sonic legacies and their restitution to the Indigenous communities where they were recorded. Taking a decolonial approach to the anthropology of music, it explores how original song-dances are mobilized to support demands for cultural autonomy, control of rainforest territories, and a “good life” on Indigenous terms. Inspired by the return of archival materials and grounded in a collaborative project, community members and anthropologists work together to reinvigorate ancestral arts and Indigenize archives, contributing to decolonial futures.

Ingrid Kummels is an anthropologist based at the Institute for Latin American Studies of the Freie Universität Berlin. She is a founding member of the International Research Training Group Temporalities of the Future and was head of the binational collaborative project Shared Soundscapes (2021–2024). She is the author of Indigeneity in Real Time: The Digital Making of Oaxacalifornia (Rutgers University Press, 2023).
