Reviews

"Despite being originally published a decade ago, the book continues to address important questions and offers unique ethnographic perspectives." Robert Rydzewski, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań

"Karolina Bielenin-Lenczowska’s work makes a significant contribution to the study of migration and Balkan studies, as well as the manifestations of contemporary Islam and European Islam. Her work demonstrates her erudition and, above all, her status as an excellent ethnographer and experienced anthropologist." Michał Buchowski, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań

Description

Focusing on the economic migration of Macedonian-speaking Muslims from North Macedonia to Italy, this study examines shifting everyday lives across transnational contexts. The title, Spaghetti with Ajvar serves as a metaphor for the immersion and mutual influence of cultural practices from the places of origin and settlement. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted between 2006 and 2014, with a return visit in 2022, it analyses migration experiences with particular attention to gender and intergenerational dynamics. Tracing translocal practices as they unfold over time, the book captures a specific moment in the lives of the Torbeši, reflecting both social change and the researcher’s own embodied experience.

Karolina Bielenin-Lenczowska is Professor at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include fieldwork methods, critical heritage studies, ethnographic and sociolinguistic aspects of migration and diaspora.
