Following up on Smithsonian Day last week, an event hosted by ‘Smithsonian’ magazine where participating museums and various cultural centers across the US provide free entry, Berghahn is excited to feature an excerpt from Extinct Monsters to Deep Time: Conflict, Compromise, and the Making of Smithsonian’s Fossil Halls by Diana E. Marsh.

Describing participant observation and historical research at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History as it prepared for its largest-ever exhibit renovation, Deep Time, the author provides a grounded perspective on the inner-workings of the world’s largest natural history museum and the social processes of communicating science to the public.

Excerpt: The German Marshall Fund of the United States

This year the German Marshall Fund marks its 50th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of the Marshall Plan. On June 5, 1972 former German Chancellor Willy Brandt announced the founding of the German Marshall Fund of the United States at Harvard University. Founded by Guido Goldman through a gift from Germany as a tribute to the Marshall Plan, GMF is a non-partisan policy organization committed to the idea that the United States and Europe are stronger together. GMF champions the principles of democracy, human rights, and international cooperation, which have served as the bedrock of peace and prosperity since the end of World War II, but are under increasing strain.

The GMF is considered one of Guido Goldman’s greatest achievements. To mark this historic moment and to honor Guido Goldman’s legacy Berghahn is featuring an excerpt from GUIDO GOLDMAN: Transatlantic Bridge Builder by Martin Klingst.

Excerpt: Time and Midwifery Practice

The International Day of the Midwife (5 May) has been celebrated every year since 1992, recognizing the vital role midwives play in reproductive care. This year’s theme, Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives, focuses on coming together as a global midwife community to advocate for investment in quality midwifery care around the world, improving sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health in the process. To learn more and get involved, visit the International Confederation of Midwives’ official site.

The Legacy of the Wannsee Conference: 80 Years Later

The New York Times recently featured an article on the Wannsee Conference, one of the most significant events in the history of The Holocaust. On 20 January 1942, fifteen senior German government officials attended a short meeting in Berlin to discuss the deportation and murder of the Jews of Nazi-occupied Europe. Despite lasting less than two hours, the Wannsee Conference is today understood as a signal episode in the history of the Holocaust, exemplifying the labor division and bureaucratization that made the “Final Solution” possible. Yet while the conference itself has been exhaustively researched, many of its attendees remain relatively obscure. In recognition of the historical 80th anniversary this year, we present an excerpt from The Participants: The Men of the Wannsee Conference (edited by Hans-Christian Jasch and Christoph Kreutzmüller).
